When the decisions matter, bring a physician.

You may already have a financial advisor, a legal advisor, maybe a tax or estate advisor. You deserve one for your health. Most people navigate the medical system alone, at the worst possible time. An unexpected hospitalization. A new and frightening diagnosis. A loved one whose care suddenly needs a steady hand. These moments rarely involve just the patient. They reach the whole family.

That is when a patient advocate matters.

Dr. Scott was an extraordinary source of support and advocacy throughout my mother’s brain tumor journey. From the very beginning she went far beyond what anyone could expect. She visited our home, came with us to appointments, and stayed in constant communication every step of the way. While my mother was in surgery, she stayed connected with us, guiding us on the right questions to ask and helping us understand the decisions in front of us. She was not only an advocate for my mother’s health, but a true partner in our journey. We will always be deeply grateful.

I have first-hand personal experience with Dr. Scott in her role as a patient health advocate. When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, I called her for advice. Even with a very busy schedule, she took the time immediately to talk me through the diagnosis, send me information about the cancer he had, and coach me on what to ask his doctors at his next appointment. She gave me the comfort of understanding the diagnosis and prepared me to be my husband’s advocate. She spoke with his doctors, which I believe made them pay closer attention to him. She also helped us set up second-opinion appointments with the best cancer specialists in the country, ones we could never have arranged ourselves in time. In the end he was able to make the best choices for treatment, and I was able to advocate for him with his doctors. She is kind, caring, and always willing to spend whatever time it takes to give her patients the edge in the medical system. He had a great outcome.

Our family has referred several individuals to Dr. Scott who have had very good outcomes. All had an unexpected health diagnosis. Two were a terminal cancer diagnosis and another was a young man with a very serious cancer diagnosis. In all cases I have seen her kindness, care, persistence and medical expertise help all these patients achieve an outcome they would not have had otherwise. She is relentless in seeking the treatment that will make the difference. She approaches her profession not with the dollars first, but with the client and their needs first. Dr. Scott believes patient advocacy is her calling. Dr. Scott is my hero. I admire who she is and what she is contributing to further patient advocacy. My life and the lives of many others I know are certainly better because of Dr. Scott.

Carol served as our patient advocate, and she gave us hope where there was only fear and despair. She made contacts late at night when we first spoke and got us in the next day with the best person in the field. She stuck with us through the bad, then the better, then the scary times, never letting go of my hand. Her knowledge, her confidence, and her ability to open doors are unrivaled. She is a savior.

I have found maneuvering today’s health care system to be a daunting task, but Dr. Scott has been a godsend. Whenever a family member has had a serious medical condition, I have called on her. She has served as a liaison with our health care providers, interpreted complex diagnoses, and helped my family understand the options for treatment. She even traveled to another city to make sure my elderly uncle received appropriate care and to find a nursing home for his short-term rehabilitation. Dr. Scott has been a blessing, and we can never repay her for her care, concern, sound advice, and professionalism.
